Reducing the Distance in Distance Learning

Leaders around the world have squabbled incessantly about the merits of synchronous vs. asynchronous learning. Some seem to have gotten it right, while others have merely attempted to copy and paste business-as-usual face-to-face learning into an online format. Rather than continuing the unproductive debate of synchronous vs. asynchronous learning, we should look towards research and theory aimed at reducing the psychological space, aka transactional distance, between participants and instructors through pedagogy.
